SPTB to tap Indonesia Japanese community MICE segments 

Surabaya Promotion Tourism Board (SPTB) is keen on tapping the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) sectors for Japanese community.

“Japanese community based in Indonesia, based on 2006 data are top five of visitor in Surabaya both in terms of value and volume. they mostly come for business purpose and We see this as an opportunity to promote Surabaya as an alternative for Bali and Jakarta as a location for MICE,” said Yushak Anshori, Executive Director of SPTB in the occasion of SPTB Jakarta roadshow at Red Top Hotel, Monday (11/26).

Further Yusak said to reach that market, we will organize promotion program to Japanese companies and businessmen in Indonesia through various channel such as brochure and roadshow.

Yusak explain that Surabaya MICE facilities will offer a variety of tailor-made and off the shelf packages and services. For the MICE facilities, Surabaya had Hyatt Regency Surabaya, Sheraton Surabaya Hotel & Towers,JW Marriott, Novotel Surabaya Hotel & Suites, Surabaya Plaza Hotel, Supermall Surabaya Convention Center.

Surabaya also had MICE supporting facilities such as an airport with direct flight from Indonesia major cities such as Jakarta, Makassar, Bali, Batam, Jogjakarta and Semarang, five star rated hotel, 6-golf course designed by golf player such as Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, 15-shopping malls and one with 24 hours services, culinary spots and regular cultural & art events.

‘Surabaya usually seen as shadow of Jakarta for MICE sector, but SPTB would like to change that, in cooperation with Surabaya City Administration who had carry out a “green and clean” project and improve infrastucture facilities such as the development of street separator and direct highway which linked airport with downtown, we eager to develop the city become beautiful and convenient for visitor’ Yusak said.

SPTB established in December 2006 with mission to promoting Surabaya as a tourist destination beside Bali and Jogjakarta nationally and internationally. SPTB is comprised of tourism-related organizations in Surabaya, united to combine their efforts in the promotion of Surabaya tourism and working together with the local government on tourism-related policies and issues.

Last September, Director General of Marketing for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Thamrin B. Bachri said, the Government has designated ten areas of Indonesia as official MICE destinations, namely: Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Batam, Medan, Bandung, Makassar, Padang and Semarang.

In Indonesia, MICE tourism is considered to have vast potential as it can make turnover much higher than any other kind of tourism, presuming that MICE travelers always consist of several hundred travelers who have big budgets and use many kinds of services.
