Regional Investment Forum builds momentum for local governments to attract investor

Indonesian regional forum plan to kick off on May 26, 2008 at Ritz Carlton Pacific Place Jakarta and will give a momentum for local governments to play wider roles in attracting investors, President Yudhoyono was scheduled to open the two days forum.

Global Initiatives CEO Tony Gourlay (05/21) said the forum will offer some 200 viable projects worth USD19 billion in 35 districts to some 300 investors from 20 countries among others from China, India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, United States, Middle East countries and some European countries.

Tanri Abeng, IRIF advisory board chairman said there are huge opportunities for regional investment and investors especially foreign investor keen to directly invest in regions. But local administration should have clear information on its potential and cut down on red tape and local regulation for business.

Irman Gusman, deputy chief DPD said the forum will offer investment potential in four sector such as mining and energy 30 projects, agribusiness 46 projects, infrastructure 44 projects, property and tourism 60 projects.

The largest project offered in the forum is USD 4 billion Bojonegara oil refinery in Banten while the smallest is an animal husbandry project worth USD 81.000 in Central Sulawesi.

During the forum, some speakers will share their business success and expetise with participants such as  Thaksin Shinawatra, owner and chairman of Manchester City Footbal club and Datuk Musa Hitam, Sime Darby’s Chairman and Lippo Group CEO James Riady.

Two economists, Kenichi Ohmae and Kenneth Courtis, would share the strategy to invest.

Ohmae, founder and managing director of Ohmae and Associates, will shed insight into how the world economy is becoming virtually borderless and what Indonesia have to do to capitalize on this trend.

Meanwhile, Courtis, former managing director & vice chairman of Goldman Sachs Asia, will present his view on how Indonesia is reaching for the tipping point and emerging as an economic power.
